Cylinder Volume Calculator

Type the radius (or the diameter) and the height of a cylinder to get its volume, lateral area and total surface area at once. The volume also appears in litres and US gallons, so the same page works for cans, drums, pipes, columns and tanks, and the 3D model shows which measurement is which.

How to use the cylinder volume calculator

Enter the radius and the height in the same unit. If you measured across the circle instead, switch Enter round shapes as to Diameter. The volume updates as you type, and the capacity line converts it to litres and US gallons.

This page is the cylinder view of the full 3D Shape Calculator, which covers 24 solids. Every shape button is still available, so you can compare solids without leaving the page.

Formulas

Volume: V = π × r² × h
Lateral (side) area: A = 2 × π × r × h
Area of one base: B = π × r²
Total surface area: S = 2 × π × r × (r + h)

In every formula, r is a radius, h is a height or depth, and all measurements must use the same unit. The result is in that unit cubed for volume and squared for area.

Worked example

A water drum has a radius of 30 cm and a height of 90 cm. Its volume is π × 30² × 90 ≈ 254,469 cm³, which is 254.5 litres or 67.2 US gallons. Its total surface area is 2 × π × 30 × (30 + 90) ≈ 22,619 cm², the amount of metal or paint needed to cover the whole drum.

Where this is used

Cylinders are everywhere: storage drums, water tanks, pipes, cans, candles, concrete columns, wells and engine cylinders. Builders use the volume to order concrete for a round pier, plumbers use it to find the water held in a length of pipe, and cooks use it to compare tins and pots.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the volume of a cylinder from its diameter? Halve the diameter to get the radius, then use V = π × r² × h. In this calculator you can simply switch the input to Diameter and type the number you measured.

What happens to the volume if I double the radius or the height? Doubling the height doubles the volume. Doubling the radius multiplies the volume by four because the radius is squared. Doubling both multiplies the volume by eight.

How do I convert cylinder volume to litres? If the volume is in cubic centimetres, divide by 1,000 to get litres. If it is in cubic metres, multiply by 1,000. The calculator shows the capacity in litres and US gallons automatically.

How do I find the height needed for a given volume? Divide the volume by π × r². You can also let the calculator do it: choose Height from a target volume under What do you want to find? and enter the volume you need.
