The sample size for a proportion is z² × p × (1 − p) ÷ e². Using 50% for p gives the most cautious (largest) result.
Why use 50%? It maximizes variance, so it is safe when the true proportion is unknown.
Does population size matter? Only for small populations; a finite-population correction lowers n.
