Body Fat Percentage Explained: What the US Navy Method Actually Measures

Body fat percentage tells you what portion of your total body weight is fat, as opposed to muscle, bone, organs, and water. Unlike BMI, which only looks at height and weight, body fat percentage attempts to describe body composition — which is why it's often considered a more informative (though harder to measure precisely) number.

What the US Navy method actually measures

The most common at-home body fat estimation method is the US Navy circumference method, developed for military fitness assessments because it doesn't require specialized equipment — just a measuring tape. It estimates body fat using a handful of circumference measurements:

These measurements are plugged into a logarithmic formula (based on the relationship between body circumference and body density) that produces an estimated body fat percentage. It's not as accurate as clinical methods like DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing, but it's reasonably consistent for tracking changes over time in the same person.

Why body fat percentage differs from BMI

BMI can't distinguish between fat and muscle — it only compares total weight to height. Two people of the same height and weight can have very different body fat percentages depending on how much of that weight is muscle versus fat. This is the classic "athlete BMI problem": a muscular person can register as "overweight" by BMI while actually having a low, healthy body fat percentage.

Limitations worth knowing

Circumference-based methods are sensitive to measurement technique — where exactly you place the tape, how snug it is, and time of day can all shift the result by a percentage point or two. They also don't account for individual differences in body fat distribution. Treat the result as a useful estimate for tracking trends over weeks or months, not a precise clinical measurement.
