How this image converter works

Your browser reads each image, draws it onto a canvas at its original size, and saves it again in the format you pick. Because the work is done by your own device, the files never travel to a server, which keeps private photos private and makes the tool as fast as your computer is.

Choose the target format, drop in your files, and each one is converted straight away. Change the format or quality afterwards and the whole list is converted again. With two or more files you can download everything in a single ZIP. For heavier jobs such as shrinking file size or changing dimensions, use the Image Compressor & Resizer.

PNG, JPG or WebP: which one should you choose?

FormatCompressionTransparencyBest for
JPGLossyNoPhotographs and images that need a small file
PNGLosslessYesLogos, screenshots, graphics with sharp edges or text
WebPLossy or losslessYesWebsites that want smaller files than JPG or PNG

Google reports that lossless WebP files are about 26% smaller than PNG and that lossy WebP files are 25% to 34% smaller than JPG at comparable visual quality. Every current major browser can display WebP, though some older desktop programs and upload forms still only accept JPG or PNG, which is the usual reason to convert in the other direction.

Tips for good results

History and background

JPEG takes its name from the Joint Photographic Experts Group, whose standard for compressing photographs was published in 1992. Its trade-off of discarding detail the eye barely notices made digital photos small enough to store and share, and it still dominates photography.

PNG was created in 1995 after a patent dispute over the compression used by GIF made developers look for a free alternative. The format became a W3C Recommendation in 1996 and added proper support for partial transparency, which GIF never had.

WebP was introduced by Google in 2010 and was later extended with lossless compression, transparency and animation, so a single format can now do the job of JPG, PNG and GIF.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded to a server? No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device. Your images are never sent anywhere, which is why the tool also works for private or confidential pictures.

Is there a limit on how many images I can convert? You can convert up to 30 images at a time, each up to 40 MB, as often as you like. There is no watermark and no account is needed.

What happens to transparency when I convert PNG to JPG? JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid colour. White is the default and you can pick another colour before converting.

Why did my file get bigger after converting JPG to PNG? PNG is a lossless format, so it stores every pixel exactly. A photo saved as PNG is usually several times larger than the same photo saved as JPG, and the conversion cannot bring back detail the JPG had already lost.

What quality setting should I use? For JPG and WebP, 85% to 92% is a good balance between size and sharpness. The quality slider does not apply to PNG because PNG is lossless.

Does the converter keep EXIF data such as location? No. The image is redrawn and saved fresh, so camera metadata including GPS coordinates is not carried over to the new file.

Can I convert HEIC photos from my iPhone? Only if your browser can open HEIC files, which currently means Safari. If you see an error, export the photo as JPG from your phone first, or use Safari.
